This design of the Mexican five peso was made in honour of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest and revolutionary leader, who was a prime figure in the fight for Mexican independence from Spain. Issued between 1905 and 1955, the majority of these coins were made in 1955 as an official re-strike.
