Description
The Swiss 20 Franc was minted between 1897 and 1949. The obverse design by Fritz Landry shows a female portrait with plaited hair wearing a garland of edelweis with the word Helvetia above. In the background is an alpine panorama.
The reverse design is of the Swiss cross on a shield, with an ornate background of oak leaves. The denomination and date are on the reverse.
The Swiss 20 Franc is sometimes referred to as a Vreneli. This is an affectionate diminuitve of the name Verena which is often traditionally used as a reference to young females.
At the end of the Second World War, an official re-strike was produced with the date of 1935 and a letter ÔLÕ to the left of the date. In 1947 and 1949, another large mintage of coins were restruck. These have the dates of 1947 and 1949.
