Description
The one ounce Buffalo gold coin is the first 24 carat bullion coin produced by the US Mint and was originally issued in 2006. The coin was created to compete with other 24 carat coins produced by other countries. The obverse shows the portrait of a Native American which is a modified version of the Indian head nickel designed by James Earle Fraser and issued in 1913. Fraser said that he had created the design from a mixture of the features of three Native American chiefs, Big Tree, Iron Tail and Two Moons, whose portraits he had sketched. The reverse depicts an American Bison.
