Description
The 1 Rand was produced between 1961 and 1983 following South Africa becoming a Republic. This resulted in changes to the currency where the pound was replaced by the decimal Rand.
The obverse shows a portrait of Jan Van Riebeeck, the founder of the first Dutch settlements in South Africa. The reverse shows a design by Coert Stenberg, of the National emblem of South Africa, the Springbok, with the denomination and date.
