From 1871, the Young head Victorian Sovereign was made with a return to Pistruccis St George and Dragon reverse. This ran concurrently with the earlier shield reverse design until 1887. The St George and Dragon reverse was to become the standard reverse for the later Victorian Sovereigns right up till the present day. The date is shown on the reverse of the coin beneath the St George and Dragon. The mintmark now appears below the portrait on the obverse of the coin and there is no mintmark for coins minted in London.
