Description
The South African Half Pond was the equivalent of the British half Sovereign and was minted between 1892 and 1900 for the South African Republic, which is now South Africa. It had a face value of ten shillings.
The obverse shows a portrait of the President, Paul Kruger, by Otto Schulz which was later used on South Africa’s flagship bullion coin, the Krugerrand. The reverse design is the Transvaal coat of arms.
The Half Pond was first minted at the end of the 19th Century by the Pretoria Mint, to take advantage of the vast amounts of gold coming into the State following the gold rush of 1886. This led to a boom in the South African Republics economy and to their future success as a gold producer.
