Description
The Austrian quarter ounce gold Philharmonic was first minted in 1989 by the Austrian Mint. It is struck in 24 carat gold ( 0.9999) and originally had a face value of 500 Austrian Schillings, but from 2002 onwards the face value became 25 Euros. Designed by Thomas Pesendoder, the Austrian MintÕs chief engraver, the Philharmonic bears an obverse design of the famous pipe organ from the Vienna Musikverein, with the reverse depicting eight significant orchesteral musical instruments – four violins and a cello in the foreground, with a Viennese horn, a bassoon and a harp in the background. The Philharmonic is the only modern bullion coin minted in the EU and is very popular in mainland Europe.
