Sovereigns are one of the most popular coins for UK investors, as it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax and not subject to VAT. Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne on the death of her father, King George VI, in February 1952. She was just 25 years old when she became queen and was to become the longest reigning monarch with a reign of over 75 years. Over those years she was to celebrate her Silver, Gold, Diamond and Platinum Jubilees Ć a feat never accomplished by any previous monarch. She married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1947 and they had four children.

In 2000, a new gold Sovereign was issued for the Millennium, the first uncirculated sovereign that had been issued since 1982. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse continues with the design of St George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci.
There were various designs to the sovereign between 2000 and 2022.
In 2002, a Sovereign with a shield reverse was made to commemorate the Golden Jubilee. This was the first time that a shield reverse had been used since the reign of Queen Victoria.
In 2005, a new adaptation of the St George design by Timothy Noad was featured on the reverse.
In 2012, a Sovereign with a new adaptation of St George was struck to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee.
In 2015, the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark was introduced.
In 2016, a special portrait was by James Butler was used to commemorate the 90th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
In 2017, a commemorative Sovereign was produced for the 200th Anniversary of the modern version of the Sovereign. As a change from the usual design, this showed the date on the obverse of the coin with the original design of St George and the Dragon used in the reign of George III on the reverse.
