Description
Queen Wilhermina reigned from 1890 to 1948. The 10 guilder coins from that time range through four different portraits and are dated up to 1933.
Queen Wilhermina ascended the throne at the age of ten, on the death of her father. She became a popular monarch, mainly for managing to retain neutrality during World War I and solving many of her country’s economic problems. Her business ventures made her the first female billionaire in US dollars. She fled to Britain during the Second World War, but became a symbol of the resistance by frequently speaking to her nation over the radio and leading the Dutch government in exile. When she retuned to a liberated Netherlands in 1948, she was the only one of the 16 European monarchs who had been in power at her inauguration to have survived.
